— For more than fifteen years, Hunter Chinese Language School has supported children and families through language learning, cultural education and community participation.

Hunter Chinese Language School began in 2009 with support from the NSW Department of Education. Its original purpose was to help children from migrant families maintain their heritage language and cultural connection.

As community language education developed across NSW, many language programs gradually became independently operated schools. In April 2014, Hunter Chinese Language School was formally established and became a recognised community language school in the Hunter region.

Over the years, through the dedication of parents, teachers and community supporters, the school has grown and developed strong connections across Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle. By combining traditional Chinese culture with contemporary Australian teaching approaches, the school aims to create a dynamic, practical and enjoyable learning environment for students.

In 2019, with support from the NSW Department of Education, the school was selected as a pilot school for the use of interactive smartboards in community language classrooms.

Since 2019, Hunter Chinese Language School has also developed partnerships with schools, cultural organisations and community groups. Students and families have taken part in a wide range of competitions and events, including the National Chinese Recitation Competition hosted by the NSW Chinese Language Education Council, the Hello Chinese competition organised by the Chinese Teachers Federation, the Newcastle Multicultural Festival and the Student Talent Show hosted by the Central Coast Schools Association.

One important milestone was the co-created dance performance The Ceremony of Entering School, developed with Taoli Chinese School. After progressing through several selection rounds, the work was performed on the Light of Chinese stage in Sydney in October 2019 and was warmly received by the audience.

In recognition of the school’s contribution to community language education, Hunter Chinese Language School was appointed to the 2020 regional committee for community language schools in the Hunter area. This opportunity further strengthened the school’s ability to promote Chinese language and culture across the region.

The school has also worked closely with local cultural organisations. Students performed in two consecutive Chinese Cultural Festivals, and in 2021 the school hosted the Community Language and Cultural Arts Festival, bringing together schools from Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle.

In 2021, Hunter Chinese Language School independently developed a culturally integrated language program titled Shadow Puppets’ Show. The program received recognition and support from the Community Languages Schools Program and gave students the opportunity to explore Chinese language through traditional storytelling, visual art and performance.

In 2022, the school organised an Australia Day Multicultural Celebration on the Central Coast. The event featured performances by local community groups and individuals and was broadcast live on Facebook.

In 2025, the school received further government support to develop a new Chinese audiobook project. Through writing and recording stories, students were able to deepen their language learning while building creativity, confidence and cultural understanding.
